Let me ask you a quick questions…
When you start a new business, do you follow the road map that is given to you, or do you do things your own way?
A lot of times when we start a new business we make the crucial mistake of not following the system.
Sometimes we think we know it all and start doing things in our own way. Even though we were given a road map we still blindly start building in our own way.
To be very very transparent… I have personally been guilty of doing this myself.
I can remember back in the 1990's when I was younger playing basketball for my high school and my coach use to always say…
“The way you practice is the way you play“, so go out there be serious and practice at a hi level.
Well being a teenager at that time I thought I knew it all…
…so of course I did not listen and take his advice. I wanted to have fun, shot free throws with my eyes closed and joke around like I was taking the last shot to win a NBA game.
2 weeks later I find myself going into a game to substitute our starting point guard fouled out.
Not only did he foul out but, we were losing by 2 points with 20 seconds to go, and we had to bring up the ball from the opposing teams basket.
I was nervous as hell…my legs literally felt like jello, but I knew I could not let everyone down.
They in-bounded the ball to me and the opposing team started to pressure us hard.
After getting the ball over half court it was about 12 seconds left. I went to the left , came back to the right…
Then I took the last shot as if I was Micheal Jordan trying to win the game over the New York Knicks!
The buzzer went off and the gym erupted with noise….
I had just shot an air ball and my team lost the game.
The morale of my story is this…
If I had followed the instruction of my coach and took my practices more seriously…
I am not saying I would have made the last shot, but I am saying I would have been better prepared to take the last shot which may had yielded a different result.
So me not listening and not being coachable cost me future playing time on my basketball team.
So what does my story has to do with you and your business?
Honestly it has a lot to do with you and your business…
